Overview: CalFlyFisher.com
Many California anglers still have a copy of the innaugural issue of California Fly Fisher archived on a bookshelf somewhere. Published since late 1992, the various issue's covers have featured the imagery of notable photographers such as R. Valentine Atkinson and Chip O'Brien; and the images of beautiful waters and stunning trout and other species. Inside, there have been the writings of Seth Norman, Michael Checchio, Andy Burke and so many others. California Fly Fisher has endured the test of time, and for years been considered the finest publication addressing the topic of fly angling in California.
After integrating the existing logo into an outdoor graphical theme, we installed Storefront 5.0 as the engine for processing subscriptions.
Another key requirement was to accomodate refreshing the "current issue" page, as this would change every two months. So we built a custom tool that allows our client to manage the database that populates that page.
Current Issue Administration
The tool pictured to the left allows the administrative user to upload and resize the cover image into a thumbnail. The essay which appears on the index page of each publication is then supplied, along with title/blurb/author name entries for each article.
When a new issue is sent to the subscribers, this tool is used again to reflect which is the current issue, and the "current issue" page in the public portion of the site reflects the correct entries.
Article Index
Since the inception of this fine publication, an annual index has been maintained. Browse any January issue and you will find an index that directs you to which issue covered specific waters, counties, species, fly patterns and so on.
We automated that index, and provided tools to manage this content. Listed below is the tool for managing the "fly pattern index." Additional tools also exist for "California Counties" and "States/Countries".
